Vineyard Notes
Hilliard Bruce Vineyard is located on the cool slopes near the western boundary of the Santa Rita Hills appellation. It is comprised of 15.7 acres of Pinot Noir and 5.3 acres of Chardonnay. The climate is defined by a cool and windy maritime influence, allowing the vines an extended growing season. The soil is comprised of sandy silt, which allows for fast drainage and ultimately, more complex flavors. The vineyard prides itself in being Sustainable in Practice (SIP), while maintaining the vineyard’s health and productivity.
Production Notes
The vintage of 2013 proved to be the highest quality vintage thus far for Kitá Wines. It’s amazing to see two consecutive vintages of amazing quality and a second year of ideal growing conditions. Yields were back to normal after the high-yielding vintage of 2012. We saw great weather conditions during the growing season and a balanced crop load which led to an outstanding vintage. The moderate weather conditions put little pressure on the vines and produced grapes with well-balanced chemistries. Although the harvest was compressed with everything ripening at once, the consecutive dry year produced low to average yields with smaller berries. The high skin-to-juice ratios produced more intense colors and flavors. The wines in barrel showed great richness, depth, and balance in their infancy which proved to show signs of an excellent vintage.
Food Pairing Notes
The smooth, velvety tannins and elegant aromatic profile of this Pinot Noir from Sta. Rita Hills lends itself to many proteins ranging from oven-baked salmon filets to feathered game-like duck breast with a citrus glaze. The earthy characters in this wine also make it match well with mushroom dishes and truffle oils.
